Sydney Harbour was a blaze of colour as Australia’s biggest city rang in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks display. An estimated 1.5 million revellers lined the harbour for the midnight (1300GMT) extravaganza in the first major city to enter 2011. The Botanic Gardens, Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay were among the prime viewing positions on a clear and warm summer’s evening. Bonfire Night was celebrated in Australia until the mid- to late 1970s, when sale and public use of fireworks was made illegal and the celebration was effectively abolished. It is also celebrated in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda .[2] Festivities are centred on the use of fireworks and the lighting of bonfires.
