During the winter months, unless you live in Florida, the atmospheric condition can be horrible! Trying to sell your for sale by owner home during the winter months can keep you from making the sale. It has been shown that many home sales take place during the spring and summertime months. Here are a few reasons why selling for sale by owner during the winter may be a bad idea.

The weather during the winter is usually cold, and in some places the snow doesn’t let up for days. Even during the winter, you may still have potential buyers rushing through the door. The chances are though, they are rushing to get in where it is warm! There are also safety hazards to consider when selling in the winter .

If you live where the snowfall is endless, you will be spending majority of your time making sure the driveway is clear and the sidewalks are salted. With snowfall being continuous in some places, this may be an all day every day thing. The last thing you want to happen is to have a potential buyer come to view your home and slip or fall on the sidewalk or porch. If there are a lot of safety measures to be taken care of outside, this will take time away from other things within the home that need your attention.

Cost may be another issue. Let’s say you have twenty people come to view your home. Chances are they are not all going to come at once. Every time your door opens, you lose valuable heat. Even during a short period of time, your heating costs could sky rocket! Any profit you may have had could perhaps be going to extra heating costs.

Many people, especially those that are selling their homes themselves, or what is known as the for sale by owner may not think about things such as the suitable season to sell a home. This is not saying that no one could sell a home during the winter, because it can still happen. This merely points out the drawbacks of doing so in such a nasty season.
